About Prada

Prada was started by Fratelli Prada in 1913 as a leather goods shop in Italy. The company spent the first half of the 1900s selling leather goods, steamer trunks and handbags. In the mid 1950s, one of the Prada daughter-in-law's took the helm of the company. In 1970, Miuccia Prada joined the company and began making waterproof backpacks. She finally released her first collection of backpacks and totes made of a tough military nylon in 1979. Next, Miucci and her boyfriend sought wholesale markets for their designs and opened a second boutique in Milan in 1983. The next year, Prada released its nylon tote and began to open locations across Europe and in New York City. A shoe line was released in 1984 and in 1985 the classic Prada handbag debuted and became an overnight success, due to its fashionable practicality. In 1989, Prada launched its ready-to-wear line and their popularity skyrocketed as they became known for their clean lines and opulent fabrics. Time magazine described the Prada ascetic as, "unassertive, combining traditional good manners and an ultramodern industrial sleekness." Thus, the Prada look became associated with high powered, affluent women.

Prada became one of the most influential fashion houses in the 1990s. Wearing Prada became a luxury status symbol for people in the fashion know. During this time, Prada bags became prominently displayed in department stores and became a hit with fashion editors. In 1990 sales hit $31.7 million. Two years later Prada launched a secondary brand, Miu Miu, targeted at younger customers. The mid-1990s saw the introduction of men's ready-to-wear and the company was awarded the "designer of the year" award from CFDA. By this time, Prada operated in 4 locations worldwide with revenues of $674 million in 1997. Prada was now one of the top luxury goods manufacturers in Europe.

Prada began as a small Italian leather goods shop, but is now one of the most highly renowned purveyors of luxury goods for men and women. Known for its influence designs and quality materials, Prada is synonymous with quality and luxury.
