Dooney and Bourke began in 1975 when founders Peter Dooney and Frederic Bourke opened their first store in South Norwalk, Connecticut. Known as "The Company Store," this first enterprise specialized in unique, vibrantly colored belts and classic suspenders. Soon, the company added accessories such as wallets, briefcases, shoes and a small clothing line to their store. By 1981, the company expanded to include handbags with the debut of the Tack Case and the Equestrian back, both of which were made of bridle leather. Two years later, Dooney and Bourke developed their now famous All Weather Leather (AWL) bag using a duck logo with russet leather trim. The AWL bag is renowned because of its weatherproofing and use of cowhide as a fabric.
In 2006 and 2007, a small oval-sized bag, called the "Emma Bag," after actress and niece of Julia Roberts, Emma Roberts, was added to the line. The Dooney and Bourke line of handbags became so successful that TV star Hayden Panettiere designed her own bag for the company. Other celebrities such as Mischa Barton from The O.C., Lindsay Lohan and Michelle Trachtenberg have all modeled for Dooney and Bourke in recent years in magazines such as Vogue, Vanity Fair, and Elle.
Dooney and Bourke strives to be a successful line that offers luxurious, detailed products, priced to be easily accessible to the budget conscious woman. Dooney and Bourke products are available in major upscale stores such as Nordstrom and Saks Fifth Avenue, as well as The Company Store in Norwalk, Connecticut and the flagship store in New York City.
