The Chloe fashion house began in the 1960s by a group of left bank designers who came to define the Parisian ready-to-wear style known as "Le Style." Future Chanel chief designer, Karl Lagerfeld, became Chloe's head designer in 1966, bringing Chloe to the forefront of fashion, with clients such as Jackie Kennedy, Grace Kelly, and Brigitte Bardot.
In 1985, the company was purchased by luxury goods conglomerate Richemont Group. During this time, Chloe's success continued with a series of high profile designers, such as Martine Sitbon who continued to be true to Chloe's cutting-edge style. Stella McCartney, daughter of Beatle Paul McCartney, took over head designer functions in 1997 where she reinvented the image of Chloe with a romantic mixture of vintage, softer looks that relied on perfect tailoring. This reinvention of the brand led Chloe to a success it had never before reached.
By the turn of the century, Phoebe Philo took over as lead designer, once again reinventing the image of Chloe with a more luxurious, sexy daywear line defined by fluid lines and diaphanous tops. This modern point of view continued with the addition of Paulo Melim Andersson in 2006. On March 10, 2008, Hannah MacGibbon was named Creative Director of Chloe, where she brought her vision of femininity and sophistication to the brand. More than fifty years after the inaugural Chloe line of fashion, celebrities such as Kirsten Dunst, Natalie Portman and Lou Doillon continue to sport the romantic, luxurious Chloe fashions.
